This easy hike leads us on beautiful paths through a picturesque mire, forest, and fjell landscape in the Finnish Urho-Kekkonen National Park. Over boardwalks, sandy paths, and slightly rocky terrain, we walk with only minor altitude changes through the pristine landscape. At first, a peaceful stream accompanies us, later we walk along a reindeer fence that separates two different herds. Our constant companions are reindeer and flora adapted to the polar zone. The Urho-Kekkonen National Park is located in the northeast of Lapland and is not far from the Russian border. Therefore, from the highest point of our tour, in good weather and thanks to the clear air, the view extends to Russia. Otherwise, we look over a wide fjell landscape and the dense forests in the valley.

    Author’s recommendation

The nearby Kiilopää mountain is slowly eroding. Therefore, at the Fjell center Kiilopää, there is a pile of sand and buckets available for visitors to bring sand to the mountain to help preserve it.

    Fjell Center Kiilopää

    Roadbook

We start our route at the Fjell center Kiilopää. From the beginning, we keep left and first walk on a fairly wide path and later over boardwalks through the forest. We follow the path along a small stream, initially keep right at the reindeer fence, and shortly after reach a gate which helps us cross the fence. Afterwards, we keep right and hike slightly uphill along the fence. The landscape becomes increasingly barren, and we are finally accompanied only by small bushes, mosses, and lichens. After about 2 km, we reach the highest point of our route. From here, we enjoy a great view over the surrounding fjell. After a short break, we follow the path southwest downhill again. We cross the fence again and follow the trail along the slopes of Kiilopää until we reach our starting point again after a total of 6.3 km.
