In the Inari-Saariselk\u00e4 region, you are invited to explore this vibrant culture with local, S\u00e1mi-run companies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"element-heading\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The S\u00e1mi in Finland: three languages and three cultures<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"regular-block\">\n<p>The S\u00e1mi have their own languages and culture, which differ from those of ethnic Finns. In Finland, the S\u00e1mi speak three languages: North S\u00e1mi, Inari S\u00e1mi and Skolt S\u00e1mi, which are different enough for the speakers to struggle to understand each other. Even today, traditional S\u00e1mi livelihoods help to maintain the language in a living culture. Methods related to reindeer husbandry and fishing pass on from parents and grandparents. Traditional S\u00e1mi handicrafts, called <em>duodji<\/em>, are still made using old techniques. Duodji is a source of inspiration to modern designers and artists. These handicraft traditions emphasise the connection with nature. Natural materials are sourced locally and used efficiently without wastage. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"regular-block\">\n<p>Traditional livelihoods play an important role in passing on the culture. Children learn customs and practices related to a livelihood from their parents. This is reflected in the travel industry. Many <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.laplandnorth.fi\/things-to-do\/culture-local-life\/\">S\u00e1mi-owned companies in the Inari-Saariselk\u00e4 region<\/a> are family businesses involving several generations. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"regular-block\">\n<p>A visible \u2013 and audible \u2013 part of the S\u00e1mi culture is its unique musical tradition, yoik. Its topics arise from the community and natural surroundings. A yoik may be dedicated to a human being, a natural phenomenon or an event. Often, it does not contain lyrics. Instead, the topic is depicted via the melody and variations in the use of voice. Inari\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/siida.fi\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Siida S\u00e1mi Museum and Nature Centre<\/a> \u2013 the national museum of the S\u00e1mi \u2013 invites visitors to learn about the fascinating S\u00e1mi culture and unique Lappish nature all year round. The outdoor museum area showcases traditional S\u00e1mi building techniques, starting from the pre-historic era. In spring 2020 Siida will launch a large-scale project to revamp its collection and exhibition spaces. The museum will remain open during the renovation.
