About N\u00e4\u00e4t\u00e4m\u00f6 & Sevettij\u00e4rvi<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n

Sevettij\u00e4rvi is the centre of the Skolt S\u00e1mi area, and it is one of the very few places in the world where it is still possible to hear the Skolt S\u00e1mi language being spoken daily. The Skolt S\u00e1mi are an indigenous population of the Kola Peninsula in Russia, who lost their native lands in Petsamo as a result of the Second World War. Sevettij\u00e4rvi was founded when a total of 51 Skolt families were evacuated from Petsamo in 1949. In terms of their language and traditions, Skolts belong to the Eastern S\u00e1mi and they are Orthodox by religion. Skolt S\u00e1mi clothing style, music, festival traditions, customs, and food traditions also include eastern features.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

A true wilderness<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Located in the furthest north-eastern corner of Finnish Lapland, Sevettij\u00e4rvi is only half-an-hour-drive from the lively border village of N\u00e4\u00e4t\u00e4m\u00f6. Due to the nearby River N\u00e4\u00e4t\u00e4m\u00f6joki, the area is one of the favourite spots for fishermen. Both locations are reachable from the airport of Ivalo and the village of Inari. Airport and harbour of Kirkenes, Norway are also near. It is easy to combine a road trip on the shore of the Arctic Ocean to your visit in N\u00e4\u00e4t\u00e4m\u00f6 and Sevettij\u00e4rvi. <\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Skolt S\u00e1mi Heritage House & Orthodox Church <\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

The Skolt S\u00e1mi Heritage House is a great place to learn about the Skolt S\u00e1mi history and culture. The Heritage House is open in the summertime and it is free for visitors. It is located next to the Orthodox Church and its cemetery.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n\t\t\t\t\n\t

Sevetti-Pulmanki Trail<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

The Sevettij\u00e4rvi-Pulmanki hiking trail leads from Lake Pulmankij\u00e4rvi through the vast wilderness of Kaldoaivi. The route is approximately 60-70 km long. In its southernmost parts the route traverses’ boreal forests, while the terrain becomes more rugged towards the North, birch being the predominant vegetation. There are some wilderness huts along the route and the most recommended time for hiking is during July \u2013 August. There is also a separate winter route both for skiers and snowmobilers. <\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n\t\t\t\t\n\t

River N\u00e4\u00e4t\u00e4m\u00f6joki<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

N\u00e4\u00e4t\u00e4m\u00f6joki River is situated north of Sevettij\u00e4rvi. The river is born in Iij\u00e4rvi and runs into the Arctic Ocean on the Norwegian side. N\u00e4\u00e4t\u00e4m\u00f6joki is an ideal destination, especially for fly fishers. Salmon, trout, grayling and whitefish are caught in the mighty River N\u00e4\u00e4t\u00e4m\u00f6joki. It is recommended to fish together with a professional fishing guide to get the most of the roaring river. <\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n\t\t\t\t\n\t

V\u00e4ts\u00e4ri Wilderness Area<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

V\u00e4ts\u00e4ri is located very remotely – south of Sevettij\u00e4rvi, behind the Lake Inarij\u00e4rvi, near the Norwegian and Russian borders. This wilderness area is part of the Finnish-Norwegian-Russian protected area entity called Pasvik-Inari Trilateral Park.
