Lapland North Destinations
The route starts at Saariselkä's departure gate, from where you immediately drop down the gravelled Aurorapolku path to the Luttojoki bridge. From the bridge, a steep climb leads up to the edge of Aurorakuru, where it is worth pausing to admire the stunning views of the steep gorge. Upon reaching the edge of Aurorakuru, on the left you will find Auroratupa and a campfire site. The Prospektorin route continues right, following signs for Iisakkipää and Rumakuru. The gravelled surface ends for a moment and the path becomes partly rocky, clearly a more demanding trail.
The path is slowly climbed upwards towards the edge of Iisakkipää and Pääsiäiskuru. Along the way, there are a few short boardwalk sections and a couple of short, steep, and demanding climbs. Otherwise, the route offers demanding to moderate but pleasant ascents. The tree line is reached at about 380 meters elevation, where the trail turns left, following the northern edge of Pääsiäiskuru to the summit of Iisakkipää.
If your legs still feel strong at this point, it is worth making this roughly one-kilometer one-way side trip to the summit of Iisakkipää to admire the views. The side route is partly gravelled path that follows the edge of the gorge. From the best viewpoint of Pääsiäiskuru, a steep turn is made left straight up towards the summit of Iisakkipää. The views from the summit are stunning! If you happen to be here on an early morning late summer or early autumn just before sunrise, the views eastward can be incredible, with the sky glowing pink and the magnificent fell peaks rising from the sea of mist! After the Iisakkipää side trip, you continue along a pleasant path south towards the edge of Vahtamapää. Almost immediately on the path, there is often a small pond, and if your speed gets too high, a cyclist might encounter an unexpected splash. This tiny pond can be bypassed on the left in the direction of travel. Shortly after, the trail surface becomes a bit rockier and more challenging again. Soon you reach the highest point of Vahtamapää's slope, and the trail turns downhill. After over a kilometer of a tumbling rocky descent, you arrive at the Hirvaskuru junction, from where you could continue left along an easy gravel path towards Rumakuru and Luulampi. However, the Prospektorin loop turns right towards Laanila, also an easy gravel path. A much sharper hard right turn would follow the floor of Hirvaskuru, but this is recommended only for extremely adventurous and experienced cyclists. The Prospektorin route continues undulating towards the west, straight through the Välimaa junction, still heading towards Laanila and reaching the Prospektorin mine. Here, in 1902-1904, a quite interesting mechanized attempt was made to mine gold. Using machinery, a shaft over 50 meters deep was excavated, one of the major challenges being the massively inflowing groundwater into the shaft. Despite hard efforts, hardly any gold was found. The site is an interesting piece of history, and from the route, it is worth detouring about twenty meters to the right uphill to examine the mine shaft itself and perhaps sit a moment at this route's second campfire spot. When looking into the shaft, be careful not to drop anything into this vertical hole, as whatever falls in cannot be retrieved. From the Prospektorin mine, there is still a less than one-kilometer easy gravel path transfer to Laanila, on the main route between Saariselkä and Kiilopää. By turning right on the main route, you can quickly whiz the last three kilometers along an easy gravel path back to the starting point of the route in Saariselkä.
