Experience the majesty of Ukko-Luosto fell and enjoy old forests from the bike seat. You may sweat climbing Lampivaara, but the reward is great views through the trees, delightful café treats, and a joyful descent back. In heavy snow, the views at Lampivaara are truly magical. At Lampivaara, you can also go dig for your own amethyst on a guided tour at the Lampivaara Amethyst Mine. The route starts at Luostonportti near the slopes, passing the Ukko-Luosto parking area towards Lampivaara. The return route follows its own path along the Lampivaara service road. The recommended direction is counterclockwise. The route follows the ski trail at points and also runs separately following the summer route alignments. The route is marked with blue grooming signs, at intersections with blue winter cycling signs and brown metal signs.
Winter cycling routes are also open to walking, and this route is popular, so you may meet other hikers as well. Faster cyclists should give way to pedestrians. On hardened snow, downhill speeds can get high, making it especially important to pay attention to other route users. More open sections may be snowed in depending on weather, and after snowfall the route can be difficult to navigate. Winter cycling requires warm gear and good clothing for breaks. More information at Hiking ABC.
The route starts from Luostonportti, first running near the ski trail, in the forest on the right side of the trail. About 300 meters later, the route diverges right from the trail and starts climbing towards the village of Ukko-Luosto. The route passes right at the edge of the fell area, then passes a small cottage area and rides past the Ukko-Luosto parking area. Here the route loop section begins, which starts by crossing the trail and then climbing towards Lampivaara. The route twists along its own line on the left side of the trail and about one kilometer from the parking area crosses the national park boundary. The route arrives at Lampivaara next to a lean-to shelter. The return route follows the Lampivaara service road in the forest on the left side of the road and joins the initial part of the route at the Ukko-Luosto parking area. The recommended travel direction is counterclockwise, which allows the more difficult, twisty and uneven uphill sections to be climbed safely. The route is groomed once a week from mid-December to the end of April.
