Lapland North Destinations
The route starts at the departure gate of the Kiilopää fell center, from where you head front-right towards an ungraveled track. After about two hundred meters, the route turns left at the junction named Sivakka, and the next section towards Niilanpää's reindeer hut is on a wide gravel-based track. This is the easiest part of the route. Blue cross marks signpost the route to Niilanpää's old reindeer sorting place, where a bit off-route and lower down the slope lies an old reindeer hut that serves as a day shelter.
From the hut junction, turn onto a gentle downhill towards Taiga forest, Muotka (6.5 km), and Kakslauttanen (9.2 km). This section is also marked with blue cross marks. The path passes first Niilanpää’s day shelter, and the next just over six kilometers is almost entirely a gentle, enjoyable, smoothly rolling downhill. The path is wide and somewhat rocky in places in the beginning.
While enjoying the downhill, the birches along the route gradually grow bigger and the first conifers appear. Gradually, the route dives into the wonderful old Scots pine forest of the national park and the slight stoniness turns into a small rootiness. If you can resist the thrill of rolling, it’s worth stopping occasionally to look around and admire the old magnificent scaly-barked trees.
After rolling about 3.6 km from the Niilanpää junction, you cross the old historic Ruijanpolku Trail. There are no signposts at the junction, but crossing the Ruijanpolku, which has served as a travel route for hundreds of years, there are old wooden post markers. Our route continues straight ahead, still following the blue cross marks.
The blue cross marks guide the walker gradually out of the national park, over a small gravel road, still towards Muotka. Just before Muotka, the route reaches another road, and the blue cross marks continue in the forest slightly to the right of the road. Following the marks, you can cover the last stretch riding an easy singletrack trail to Muotka; you can also reach there via the road.
The route continues straight through the yard area of Wilderness Hotel Muotka, following small brown "Routes" signs. After the yard, you cross a stream and Tievatuvantie via a bridge. After the road, there is a T-junction. Turning left at the junction leads to Kakslauttanen via a moderately demanding ski track, and turning right leads faster back to Kiilopää following an easy ski track and small orange mountain bike markers. This route choice shortens the distance by about four kilometers.

It is easy to combine the trip with a visit to the Sivakkaoja lean-to shelter, which is located in a naturally beautiful place by the clear water stream of Sivakkaoja in the middle of a beautiful forest landscape. You can reach the shelter either by turning onto the Ruijanpolku Trail on the Niilanpää - Muotka section or, at the end of the trip, from Kiilopääntie parking lot following the Ruijanpolku Trail by bike to the shelter.Fjell Center Kiilopää
